Rich in natural minerals and exfoliating elements, sea salt is a luxurious addition to a daily facial care regime. Making your own sea salt facial scrubs is affordable and simple while allowing you to select the ingredients that suit you best. According to author Rosemary Gladstar, using sea salt scrubs for acne may reduce scarring and pitting and can improve circulation for a reduction in breakouts.

Types

Many types of sea salt are available, and all work to create a sea salt scrub. However, sea salt purists believe that Dead Sea salts may be the most therapeutic and most likely to promote the desired "salt glow" to your facial skin.

Treating Acne

Research indicates that tea tree oil decreases both inflamed and non-inflamed acne. A study published in the October 15, 1990 issue of "Medical Journal of Australia" found that tea tree oil gel of 5 percent strength had comparable effects to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide lotion, a standard acne treatment. Tea tree oil took longer to work, but patients using the oil experienced fewer side effects than those using benzoyl peroxide.

Decreasing Allergic Skin Inflammation

Preliminary research indicates that topical tea tree oil decreases histamine-induced inflammation (allergic skin reactions), according to the NIH. A study published in the December 2002 issue of the British Journal of Dermatology, found that participants experienced a significant reduction of induced allergic skin reaction within 10 minutes after a topical application of 100 percent tea tree oil.

Treating Cold Sores

Tea tree oil also shows advantages for people who have recurring cold sores (recurrent herpes labialis). A study published in the 2001 issue of the "Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy" found that cold sore treatment with tea tree oil was similar in effectiveness to other topical therapies.
The study noted that tea tree oil may be a cheaper alternative to other treatments and it may help patients avoid taking systemic antiviral drugs for recurrent cold sores.

  1. Yogurt Tea Tree Oil Mask

    • Like many tea tree oil masks, this mask is good for oily skin. Because the mask uses fresh ingredients with a shelf life, it cannot be stored indefinitely. Mix 1 tbsp. yogurt, 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tbsp. lemon juice, 1 tsp. corn flour and two drops of tea tree oil in a small bowl. Apply the mask in an opaque layer on the skin and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash it off with water.

    Tea Tree Oil Curd Mask

    • The tea tree oil and curd mask is also good for oily skin and is very simple to make. It uses a higher volume of tea tree oil per mask than the previous recipe. The recipe makes enough for one mask. Mix 1 tbsp. of thick or dense curd with six drops of tea tree oil. Spread over the face and allow the mask to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Make curd from yogurt by straining unflavored yogurt in a cheese cloth for a few hours.

Green Clay and Tea Tree Oil Mask

    • This mask recipe is not dairy based and is also best suited for oily skin. This recipe creates a mask with a paste-like consistency. Mix 2 tbsp. french green clay, 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tbsp. lemon juice and two to three drops tea tree oil in a small bowl. Spread the paste over the face and allow the mask to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse off with water.

Hydrating Facial Masks are specially created to rehydrate the skin by infusing it with nutrients that will induce the production of moisture-enhancing substances in the skin cells, like collagen, help to heal skin dryness, revive the skin’s ability to retain and balance moisture, and boost our skin’s function and defense mechanism. Don’t let your skin beg for moisture again, especially now that you know how proper hydration keeps your skin and you healthy, and protects your skin from getting old and dry.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Towel
  • Dry oats
  • Yogurt
  • Honey
  • Warm water
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Bar of gentle facial soap

Instructions

    • 1
Identify your skin type before trying a face mask. This will help you in selecting the right face mask to address your specific problems and optimally benefit your skin. If your skin is not the type that needs a hydrating face mask, there are many other masks for you to choose from. And don’t restrict your face mask to the face alone: Remember that your neck is part of your face. And your shoulders and arms take a beating as well.
    • 2
Always apply a face mask to clean skin to maximize its effect. Wash your face very thoroughly with either soap or a facial scrub to remove all the dirt, excess oils and grime. Using hot water will help to open clogged pores. Pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel.
    • 3
Select a few of the following ingredients that blend well together to create your mask: honey, dry oats, yogurt and milk. Hydrating face masks moisturize dry skin and peel away dead skin cells. These ingredients can be blended in a matter of minutes and are easily applied to the face to form a mask.
    • 4
Select a mixing bowl (such as a stainless steel bowl) that you do not mind getting dirty and add small portions of each ingredient. Gently stir them together. Once you have blended them well, check to make sure the consistency of the mixture is not too watery. When you lift a spoonful, it should be somewhat viscous and sticky. When you drop it back into the mixture, it should mound slightly, settling on the surface briefly before sinking and disappearing into the rest of the mixture. If it is too watery, add more dry ingredients.
    • 5
Try the face-mask mixture on a small area of skin on the back of your hand before applying it to the sensitive skin of your face and neck. Remove the mask from your hand after a few moments. If you have a lot of redness or a small outbreak, or your skin is reacting oddly to the mixture, do not apply it anywhere else.
    • 6
If the face mask does not irritate your skin, proceed to apply it to your face and neck (you may also apply it to your upper arms or shoulders). Use a clean hand or spoon to apply the mixture evenly across the skin. Then lie down and remain still (you may enjoy the relaxation as much as the results of the mask). Talking, laughing or moving your face will cause the mask to move around on your skin and prevent the maximum drawing out of toxins. Leave the mask on for at least 10 minutes, untill it begins to set up. If it feels dry and hardened when you touch it with your fingertips, it is time to remove it.
    • 7
Go to either the kitchen or bathroom sink to remove the mask (it is a bit messy). Turn on the water and let it reach a moderately hot temperature. Dampen a washcloth and use it to remove the mask from your face. Rinse it out after each swipe, and continue this process until the mask has been completely removed. Gently pat your face dry. Enjoy the soft, hydrated skin that you now have.

Clay has natural properties that draw out impurities and oils from the skin and helps to exfoliate its surface. Different types of clays work on various skin types. Determining your skin type is important before choosing the clay for your mask. Green clay is suitable for most skin types and is a great oil-absorber, making it a good choice for oily or acne-prone skin. White clay is gentle, though less absorbent, so it's a better choice for sensitive or normal skin.

Below are a few cosmetic clays and their properties:

Rose Clay is mild kaolin clay that can be used on normal to dry skin to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin while improving the skin's circulation. Rose Clay is tinted with iron oxides and gives a beautiful pink color to soaps and powders.

White Kaolin Clay, also known as China or White Clay, is basically kaolinite and is the mildest of all clays. White Kaolin Clay is suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. White Kaolin Clay does not draw oils from the skin and can be used on dry skin types.

French Green Clay consists mostly of montmorillonite and is highly efficient at drawing oils and toxins from the skin. French Green Clay is rich in important minerals and phyto-nutrients and is the most commonly used therapeutic clay. Use it for facials for oily skin, and body wraps. This clay is not recommended for dry or sensitive skin.

Yellow Kaolin Clay is mild clay making it suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. Yellow Kaolin Clay does not draw oils from the skin excessively and can therefore be used on most dry skin types. It can be used in soap and body powders. This clay is suitable for dry, sensitive or normal skin types.

  1. Making a Clay Mask

    • 1
Add the clay and egg white to your bowl and mix thoroughly.

A resort spa (also known as a spa resort provides a relaxing, pampering experience for people staying at the resort or people who live locally. At a resort spa you stay overnight, enjoy spa treatments, and eat whatever you want to -- steak, wine, you name it.

This is different from a health spa or destination spa, which is more about healthy living and personal transformation. (Though just to make it more confusing, many destination spas are now calling themselves "spa resorts" because it's more highly searched term on the internet.)

The classic resort spa offers golf, tennis, swimming, kids clubs, gyms, and the spa is just one more amenity. They might also offer exercise classes, either for an extra fee or free. Older resort spas, built in the nineties, tend to be smaller and not so "over the top". Newer resort spas tend to be bigger and more lavish.

How Resort Spas Differ From Health Spas
At resort spas, you usually pay for your spa treatments a la carte instead of having them as part of the total package. The resort spa may or may not offer classes like yoga, and the selection is usually much more limited than at a destination spa.

Resort spa restaurants generally offer spa cuisine, but their real forte is the rich food that most people like to order when they're out on the town or having a special night out. Spas are the new must-have amenity at resorts and hotels, so almost everyone says they have a spa.

It's important to do your research before you go. You don't want to find out what the hotel is calling a "spa" is a hot tub, or one treatment room off the gym. (This happened to me in the days before I knew better, though it's less common these days.)

What You Need To Know About Resort Spas
* Large resort spas will have a wide range of activities, including golf, swimming, tennis, and sometimes water sports, horseback riding and skiing. Some also have kids' camps.
A hotel spa (also known as a spa hotel)is generally in an urban setting and lacks all the outdoor amenities. It can range from the splashy, over-the-top to elegant, sophisticated spas .

* Resort spas do not include meals. Destination or health spas include meals. Keep that in mind when you compare prices.
* You may have to pay anywhere from $15 to $25 for yoga or other exercise classes at resort spas. Classes at health spas are included.
* Many resorts have kids' camps. Health spas don't allow children.

Resort Spas Are A Good Choice If:
* One person wants to golf, the other to spa.
* You want to eat -- and drink -- whatever you want.
* You have children
* You're a business traveler who needs a massage.

Health Spas Are Good Choice If You:
* want to jumpstart a diet or healthy lifestyle
* want to be with like-minded people
* are traveling alone
* need to address specific health issues
* want to be nurtured after a loss

Health spas help you develop a healthy lifestyle through:
  • healthy spa cuisine that emphasizes whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and nutritional education
  • a full program of fitness and stress reduction classes
  • therapeutic spa treatments including massage
  • educational lectures that teach you how to bring your healthy habits back home
Health spas, also known as destination spas, usually require that you stay at least two or three nights and some require a week. Prices at health spas usually include all meals, classes and some spa treatments.
Traditionally, resort spas offer spa treatments "a la carte" alongside golf and tennis. They focus more on relaxation and pampering than wellness. Recently, though, some resorts and even small inns are calling themselves “destination spas” even though they don't match all the traditional criteria of health spas. Other resort spas are offering exercise classes at no extra charge and lots of healthy food options. Your best bet is to decide what you're looking for and see who offers it.

Health spas serve healthy food exclusively, but there are different philosophies. Some health spas are geared towards weight loss, with restricted calories and strict portion control. Others have an all-you-can-eat philosophy. Many don't serve alcohol, while others serve wine with dinner. While health spas emphasize healthy, whole foods, it might not necessarily be organic.

Health spas have a spirit of camaraderie. You’re with like-minded people who share your interest in health. Many have a small number of guests at any one time and you can get to know people even if you go by yourself. Small groups go on hikes, take exercise classes, and share tables together. There is usually a high staff-to-guest ratio, and staff is enthusiastic.

Health spas have different personalities and vary widely in size, price, setting and programming. They can accommodate anywhere from 8 to 250 guests, with an average around 60. They come in a wide variety of prices, from most budget spas that are a few hundred dollars a night to $8,000 a week. Some are restricted calorie and others are all-you-can-eat. Here’s more information on how to choose a health spa.

There are many types of spas -- and it's important to understand the difference so you get the experience you're looking for. In general, a spa is a place where you can receive spa treatments, most commonly massage , facials, and body treatments . Spas are devoted to enhancing your health and well-being -- though medical spas have a stronger focus
Here's a guide to the different types of spas:
  • Day Spa. It offers spa treatments exclusively on a day-use basis. Many also offer salon services. Size and character can vary widely. The important thing here is to find out if the day spa is separated from the noisier salon environment.

  • Destination Spa. Its sole purpose is to help you lead a healthier lifestyle through spa treatments, exercise, and educational programming. You stay at least two nights. Some have minimum stays of three or seven nights. Spa cuisine is served exclusively.

  • Resort/Hotel Spa. It is located within a resort or hotel. It offers spa services, fitness classes and spa cuisine alongside less health choices like steaks and burgers. It's a good choice when one person wants spa and the other golf. It also works for business travelers and families.

  • Medical Spa. It offers treatments that require a doctor's supervision, such as laser resurfacing and Botox injections. It also offers spa treatments.

  • Mineral Springs Spa. It has natural mineral, thermal or seawater that is used in hydrotherapy treatments.

  • Club Spa. A day spa located in a fitness facility or health club.

  • Cruise Ship Spa Aboard a cruise ship that provides spa treatments, fitness and wellness components and spa cuisine menu choices.

  • Airport Spa It is located in an airport and specializes in short treatments aimed at the traveler, like 15-minute chair massage and oxygen therapy. Some also offer longer treatments.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is a common problem, often requiring heavily moisturizing lotions to get the flakiness under control. However, using creams infused with mint or a diluted mint oil on your skin can increase the amount of moisture the skin holds in, thus reducing the cracked appearance.

Blackheads

You can also use mint to treat blackheads. Mix three mint leaves with 1 cup of boiling water, to create an astringent or toner to swipe over your face. This will soothe inflammation and help to shrink the pores, making blackheads slowly fade over time. For an added punch, add a bit of orange peel and 1 tbsp. of witch hazel to the mix.

Acne

Acne is a common skin problem that affects people of all ages. However, many of the over-the-counter treatments are too harsh for the skin, stripping away moisture and causing more harm than good. Dab a bit of mint-based toothpaste on troublesome pimples and watch them shrink overnight. Just make sure to test a small spot first, as toothpaste can irritate some people's skin.

Foot Moisturizer

The skin of the feet is tough. It has to be to survive all of that walking around you do day in and day out. However, this means your feet are likely rough, dry and not-so pretty to look at. One potential remedy is to mix together an unscented lotion with a bit of mint extract. Then, apply this lotion to your feet each night. The skin will be noticeably softer right away and the texture will improve within a week of repeated applications.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon crumbled, dry chamomile flowers
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped, fresh mint leaves
  • Small bowl
  • Fork
  • Soft washcloth
Hide

Instructions

    • 1
Break the egg into the bowl. You can beat it slightly with the fork, but do not whip a lot of air into the mixture.

    • 2 Stir in the chamomile flowers, honey and fresh mint leaves. You will end up with a thick, sticky greenish-brown paste.
    • 3
Cover your face and neck with the mint leaf mask. Make sure that all of your skin is covered, but it does not have to have a thick layer of goop or you may end up dripping on your clothes, furniture or carpet.
    • 4
Let the mask sit for 15 minutes. It will begin to dry and become crusty on the top. If your face begins to feel stiff, go ahead and move on.
    • 5
Wash off the mask with warm water. Do not use hot water as it can actually cook the egg. Use lukewarm to medium water and a soft washcloth to remove your mint leaf facial. Your skin will feel smooth and refreshed and your pores will be harder to see.
